A Clinical Study of Alcoholic Patients Admitted in Psychiatric Ward


Abstract
The author studied the clinical characteristics of 48 alcoholic patients who had been admitted to the psychiatric ward of the Chungnam National University Hospital from January 1992 to August 1994.
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. Mean age of the patients was 47.4¡¾10.4 years, old, and 60.5% of them were in their fourties or fifties.
2. Most of the patients lived in large cities, were educated in high school, and were married.
3. 52.1% of the patients had family histories of the alcoholism, and most of them were patients' fathers.
4. Most of the patients were admitted through OPD and against their will.
5. 43.7% of the patients had previous admission histories due to alcoholism.
6. Mean age of the first excessive drinking was 25.3¡¾6.83 years old, mean duration of excessive drinking was 20.9¡¾11.1 years. Mean amount of drinking was 2.59¡¾1.21 bottles of So-ju a day.
7. Most of the patients were diagnosed as alcohol dependence. Most frequent alcohol-induced organic mental disorders were uncomplicated alcohol withdrawl, withdrawl delirium, dementia.
8. Dependent personality disorder was the most frequent personality disorder.
9. Almost all of the patients had physical illnesses.
10. 75.0% of the patients were dropped out before 5 sessions of out patient follow up after discharge.
